Yes…I said the ghostly figure of a walrus! With Cab Calloway’s voice, the walrus begins to sing the song “Minnie the Moocher.” As he sings, various other ghoulish characters start to appear. There the ghostly figure of a walrus materializes. Things quickly start to turn spooky and they duck into a cave. The two head off and eventually end up walking into a dark corner of the forest. So, she calls up her buddy Bimbo who decides to join her. Whatever the problem is, it’s got Betty upset enough to decide to run away. The film begins with Betty and her parents involved in a bit of a family spat. While this short subject may not have a particularly scary title, the images that the Fleischer Studios put in it are definitely of the Halloween variety. Most likely you’ve at least seen his performance of the song in The Blues Brothers. You may recognize that as the title of the signature song for singer Cab Calloway. It’s a Betty Boop cartoon from 1932 called Minnie the Moocher. ![]() You All Look Familiar: The same fuzzy eared bear is reused in some shots, most noticeable when the guests first enter Betty's house and it's nothing but the same bear over and over again.The title of today’s film does not seem like it fits in a Halloween series.What Happened to the Mouse?: Once the party starts, Betty's scarecrow friend is nowhere to be seen.The Voiceless: The Scarecrow doesn't talk, though it probably doesn't have a mouth.That Cloud Looks Like.: The cartoon opens with a shot of the full moon with clouds passing by that look like a cat, a witch and a bat.Scary Scarecrows: A friendly non-scary version with a broom brush for a head and hands appears in the first half of the cartoon.Polka-Dot Paint: The Scarecrow helps Betty decorate by using a paintbrush to throw blobs of "witch paint" and "cat paint" against the wall, which instantly forms a picture of their respective names.Panty Shot: When Betty answers the door and notices no one there, she bends forward with her back directly to the camera, showing her bloomers to the audience.Gorilla: Yooou! (hits him with a weighted sock) Owls Ask "Who?": The Gorilla comes across an owl:.Killer Gorilla: A bully of a gorilla crashes Betty's party and tries to kidnap her.Jack Frost: An impish version appears flying in an icy biplane with his name on the side as it sends a chill through the night.Impact Silhouette: The Gorilla escapes from Betty's house by crashing through a wall creating a gorilla shaped hole, then the hole itself actually moves across the wall and slides out the door.Halloween Trickery: The Gorilla who even before crashing Betty's party, just strolls through the night, whacking everyone and everything he comes across with a weighted sock. ![]() Betty and her guests sing a song called "Let's All Sing Like the Birdies Sing", which really doesn't seem like a fitting song to sing on Halloween.
